The US Watercraft Team

Randy Borges aka “Dunes”

President – Randy grew up sailing at the Youngstown Yacht Club on Lake Ontario. He spent summers working in the boatyard for RCR Yachts.

In 1982 Randy moved to Newport, RI and began working for Newport Offshore, which at the time was host for many of the America’s Cup Syndicates and the builder of numerous 12 Meters including the Cup Defender “Liberty” After the loss of the cup in 1983 Dunes went to work for Williams & Manchester Shipyard where he assisted in the construction of three 12 Meters for the America 2 Syndicate and went on to work and sail for the New York Yacht Club overseeing all the maintenance and modifications to the boats in Australia.

After returning to the USA he went to work for Merrifield & Roberts supervising construction of a Claus Oldenburg designed 52ft “Spoon” which is now on display at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis MN. From there he spent time working for Don Watson at Concordia Custom Boats and again at Williams & Manchester Shipyard assisting in several new boat construction projects.

It was during this time that Randy along with two partners (Tim Murray & Kevin Hudner) formed “Waterline Systems” as a hobby shop! Randy, Tim and Kevin all had fulltime jobs throughout the sailing industry. Several years later Tim and Kevin moved on and Randy was faced with the decision that ultimately resulted in WLS taking the step to becoming his fulltime occupation. From its inception Waterline Systems focused on One Design optimization.

The success of the J-22 and J-24 classes provided many opportunities for WLS to showcase their work. With successes in those classes WLS was well positioned to expand their services to the J-105, Mumm 30, and Farr 40 classes.

Randy has competed in and won multiple North American & World Championships in the J-22 and J-24 classes. Today WLS still provides “World Class” Service to Grand-Prix and One Design customers from around the World. In addition Randy established Waterline Systems as the licensed builder of the J-22, J-24, Mumm 30 and Farr 40 One Designs. round the World.
